Warframe Beginner Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Warframe explained for beginners: which frame to pick, how modding works, what to do first, and why it's the most generous free game ever.

Warframe has been called "the best free game nobody understands" — 60+ playable frames, deep modding, and a decade of content. This guide gets you past the confusion.

Your First Frame

You start by choosing one of three starter frames:

  • **Excalibur** — balanced swordsman, perfect first pick for most players
  • **Mag** — crowd control and shield manipulation
  • **Volt** — speed and electricity, great for team play

    • Pick Excalibur if unsure. You can farm or buy every other frame later — all 60+ frames are earnable free.

    The First 10 Hours

    1. Finish the star chart. Planet by planet, junction by junction. This unlocks everything else.

    2. Do the "Vor's Prize" quest fully — it's the tutorial that keeps giving.

    3. Join a clan — clan research unlocks weapons and frames you can't get elsewhere.

    4. Don't buy weapons with platinum. Craft them in the foundry instead — free.

    Modding Is the Real Game

    Warframe's power comes from mods, not levels:

  • **Serration** (damage) and **Vitality** (health) carry you through the entire star chart
  • Match your elemental mods to enemy factions (Corrosive vs. Grineer, etc.)
  • Leveling a mod costs credits + endo — focus on a few core mods, not dozens

    Warframe's premium currency is tradeable between players. Farm prime parts, sell them in trade chat, buy the cosmetics and slots you want. The entire paid side of the game is optional — no other major free game does this.
